During my gestalt psychotherapy training I read about the Theory of Holes, a central theory within The Diamond Approach developed by A.H. Almaas. It was the most influential and profound reading I did during my training as a therapist.
This idea that parts of the essential self can become lost and then manifest as a sense of absence inside each of us was a revelation to me.
I was in my 20s at the time and I could clearly see how I was actively trying to fill my own internal holes from the outside. I was fixated on the need for success, on future aspirations and on seeking validation from others.
I started to realise back then that experiencing a sense of lack or emptiness could be a spiritual problem, and that there may be a way back to more wholeness.
This series of collages reflects the unique manifestations of these internal holes within the psyche. A kind of landscape forms around the holes that somehow relates to the nature of what’s been lost. Each hole feels different inside, and these works are intended to articulate something about that.
They act as a way of tuning in to what’s missing inside, to give form, attention and understanding to that sense of absence.
